Introducing Terracotta 2.7

Terracotta 2.7 is a key follow-on release to Terracotta 2.6. The focus of Terracotta 2.7 was to enhance the product in ways that make it easier to deploy and operate.

Terracotta strongly recommends upgrading to Terracotta 2.7 for all deployed users with versions of Terracotta 2.6.x and prior.

Platform Support Added in Terracotta 2.7

  • Spring 2.0.8 and Spring 2.5.4
  • Glassfish V2.1

Key Features in Terracotta 2.7:

Certified Patch Process

Terracotta 2.7 introduces the ability to accept certified hot patches for systems running in production. With this capability, customers with deployed systems can accept a hot patch that is certified by Terracotta and install it without having to shut down their applications. This avoids costly downtime that can occur during a full upgrade maintenance cycle.

tc.properties settings can be configured in tc-config.xml

Terracotta tc.properties control advanced settings that are often used to tune throughput in demanding use cases. With Terracotta 2.7, tc.properties can be configured along with all existing Terracotta settings in the tc-config.xml, providing a mechanism for Operators to ensure that all relevant settings are stored and managed in a single location.

Automated High Availability Mode

Terracotta 2.7 improves the automated restart mode during failover. This feature automatically backs up cluster data for forensic purposes while simultaneously ensuring the safety and integrity of clustered data. Failover and restart is now both easier and less prone to error during fail-over.

Improved Distributed Garbage Collector (DGC) Performance and Visibility

In Terracotta 2.7, the distributed garbage collector has been updated to use a generational collection algorithm. Generational collectors were first introduced in Java 1.4, and have since proven to provide significant improvements in performance with little to no overhead. Depending on application use, the distributed generational garbage collector in Terracotta can provide excellent improvements in throughput.

Online (Hot) Backup Support

While it has always been possible to back up data files in Terracotta Versions 2.6.2 and prior, Terracotta 2.7 introduces a convenient and safe one-button hot backup feature. With this feature, Operators can be sure that all Terracotta data files are safely backed up for later restoration.

TIM Update Center

The process of installing a Terracotta Integration Module (TIM) is greatly improved with the introduction of the TIM Update Center. Users simply use the intuitive and easy to use tim-get script provided with the Terracotta Installation to easily list, install, and update Terracotta Integration Modules directly from the Terracotta Forge.

Cluster-Wide Runtime Statistics

Following on to the cluster visibility features introduced in Terracotta 2.6, Terracotta 2.7 introduces the ability to view all cluster stats in a single concise monitoring page that provides access to runtime stats including CPU, Heap Utilization, Transaction Rate.
